Fundraising Opportunity: Agape House

Today we are doing something very different and taking an opportunity to help meet the basic needs of people in our community. I had a phone conversation yesterday with Cathy Putnam, the interim executive director of Eastern Oregon Mission. This organization runs two major community outreach programs in Hermiston – Agape House and Martha’s House. Both of these programs do amazing work!

As we were concluding the call, she asked me to plug that Agape House remains open to help people with food needs during this time and I agreed that I would.

Their sole purpose is help meet the basic needs of people in our community. At Agape House, they run a food service mission that can supply emergency food to those who need that assistance. They coordinate the backpack food program for 185 students each week in Hermiston, Umatilla, and Irrigon. For many of the students served, the food in the backpack is the sole source of food to last through the weekend. The impact these programs make is truly profound.

Much of that work is community funded through donations. And so today I am offering up a simple way to help support the mission of Agape House. For each page view of this blog post, Simmons Health Insurance Partners will make a donation of $5 to Agape House – up to $250. Just by reading this now, you’ve already secured that donation! As an added bonus, for every click of the “heart” at the bottom of this post, an additional $5 donation will be made – up to an additional $250. It’s as simple as that. You don’t have to like, tag, or share a post on social media or anything like that – but it might help drive a few extra page clicks if you feel so inclined! We’ll count page views and such from now until Saturday at 5:00 PM.

I am deeply grateful to the Agape House and the entire Eastern Oregon Mission staff and board – past and present – for the work they do every day to make Hermiston a great place to be. They are truly living out their gospel mission in answering the call of Jesus found in Matthew 25:35-40 where we read,

For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’

Stay well everyone, and if you or anyone you know needs a little food to get you through, go see our friends at Agape House. They are there to help!
